If you know a parent or care-giver of a child on the Autism spectrum, you are probably aware of the challenges they face.  While the medical community can be quick to diagnose and prescribe medications, but there are often more natural and holistic options available. On Saturday, April 20th, a number of local practitioners will be hosting a forum on Holistic Approaches to living with Autism.  Presenters include Energy Therapy practitioners, dieticians, and others.  Each will be sharing specific stories from their own work with children on the spectrum.  They will outline an approach that views these children as highly sensitive people. Exploring new strategies for helping children stay healthy, communicate their feelings and ground their energies, the panel will include an extensive open Q & A session. Stay tuned, and we’ll update this posting with the practitioners who are involved in the program and additional information as it becomes available. Meditation Challenge: In The Dark!

Feb 20, 13 Meditation Challenge: In The Dark!

Posted by in Blog

I am a 30+ year old ADULT – but I can admit, I am still afraid of the dark.  I have a vivid imagination that is too happy to create all manner of things to worry about.  That’s why when I first heard about this, my first thought was – no way!  But I have to share it with you all. Meditating in the complete dark is certainly a challenge, but there are lots of good reasons to try it.  The most obvious one is to master your fear.  Meditation is about controlling the mind and quieting it.  If you are like me, sitting up in the dark makes you feel exposed – stimulating your mind (and imagination!) so it takes extra focus to centre yourself and let go. Forcing yourself to sit in the dark – even though it makes you nervous is also a great way to build and grow a general sense of trust – in yourself and the universe in general.  If being still in the dark does make you uncomfortable, trusting that you are going to be okay, and sitting in your discomfort is a great way to develop faith in yourself and your world.  Overcoming your fear in this way can be a great boost to your confidence and self-esteem.  Its a small personal hurdle that is nice to have behind you.  (Though you will probably have to work on it for several sessions.) While meditating in the dark is great for all the above ‘self- development’ reasons, it can also really add to your meditation experience.  This is because the pineal gland (located in the brain and considered your ‘third eye’,) is extremely light sensitive.  It is only when it is in absolute darkness that the pineal gland releases the most melatonin.  Melatonin is a brain chemical that stimulates the deepest sleep as well as a number of body regeneration processes.  It is a chemical that will also result in vivid dreams – sometimes even when meditating....

Wheatgrass Shots – The Scoop

Feb 18, 13 Wheatgrass Shots – The Scoop

Posted by in Blog

Purely by coincidence, I met a rep the other day, for a company that produces and sells wheatgrass shots.  Here’s what I found out! Wheatgrass is considered by many to be a ‘super food’.  It’s basically the small blades of grass that first shoot up from the ground before maturing into wheat or rye.  Wheatgrass is highly nutritious, provides high amounts of energy and is claimed to cure a number of illnesses and diseases.  For years now, people have been juicing these blades of grass and serving them up as little green shots of goodness – but there was a problem. According to Carol Macintosh of Evergreen Wheatgrass Juice, Wheatgrass has traditionally been grown indoors in trays.  As a general consequence of farming, some seeds don’t germinate.  Which is not usually a big deal.  However, indoors, in the trays, these non-germinating seeds were actually turning mouldy.  When harvested, the blades of wheatgrass are cut ‘above the mould line’, but really it didn’t matter – because the pungent flavour of the mould worked its way into the plants at the root.  This is why a lot of people who may have had wheatgrass in the past, had to choke past the bitter after-taste, and while receiving numerous benefits from the juice, had to suffer through nausea or headaches.  These ‘side-effects’ were attributed to a ‘healing crisis’ or ‘detoxification process’, but Carol claims that they were actually a result of the mould. What Evergreen Wheatgrass does is grow their wheatgrass outdoors.  This makes all the difference, because the two things that kill mould are cold and sunlight – two things that the plants get exposure to outside.  The other benefit of growing wheatgrass outside, is that the plant grows past the sprout stage –  to the vegetable stage.  This is important, because as a sprout, wheatgrass has a high amount of simple sugars – making it syrupy and creating an addictive element for people who might have a candida or yeast overgrowth in their gut.  Allowing the...
